Body image is a person’s perception of their own body and how they feel about it. Since it is a subjective interpretation of one’s own ideas and emotions, it is an experience that may or may not be rooted in reality. One’s feelings about their body are closely correlated to one’s feelings about themselves.

In a world where our self-worth is determined by how closely we resemble the normative, socially desirable body type, body image issues are a major problem. This type of thinking leads to a variety of behavioral issues, ranging from being irritated by a minor flaw to developing an obsession with a body part that consumes one’s every waking moment. This preoccupation also has an impact on a person’s daily functioning. Although most people are unhappy with their bodies, a significant number of people suffer from extreme body image issues, which can also lead to a variety of serious disorders. A negative body image is detrimental to one’s mental and physical health. As a result, it is critical for people to strive for a positive attitude toward their body image.

Body image treatment begins with the treatment of low self-worth, shame, anxiety, and a sense of diminished value in the world, all of which are a result of one’s struggle with their body image.

Therapy is believed to be beneficial in providing a person with the techniques and strategies for dealing with these issues. It can assist in the formation of a clearer sense of self and identity apart from body image, rebuilding a self-image that has not been tainted by mistreatment, and, most importantly, accepting and appreciating one’s body.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a common form of treatment for body image issues. It is based on the practice of identifying the extreme thoughts that aggravate our body image problems and counter them. Another very common technique that is used for these issues are mirror exposure therapy. Several researchers suggest that taking a long look in the mirror is one of the best ways to deal with self-critical body image issues.

Getting comfortable in one’s own skin can be a long and difficult journey, fraught with obstacles, low self-esteem, and sometimes an extremely negative perception of oneself, but it is also essential. A healthy mind resides in a healthy body, but a healthy and positive body image is equally important for a positive state of mind.
