Do I have your consent?

Every so often we come across this terminology that even though is very unembellished and fundamental seems to confound the majority of the society. Consent at its heart is permission for something to happen or agreement to do something.

This daunting gap exacerbates/aggravates the horrors of sexual abuse to the point where sometimes even the survivor shuns the acknowledgment. Consent is fundamental in validating Sexual intimacy without it the act transforms into abuse. Consent is indispensable irrespective of the setting whether pre-marital or post marital.

Let us look into a very simple analogy for the same. Consent is like tea. We only serve tea to somebody if they want to have it at that very moment. Not before, not after. We could have prepared the tea well before time but still don’t force somebody to drink it if they don’t want it at that very moment. The same way we don’t make someone have tea first and then ask the person after if they wanted to drink it. It is that simple. So consent is only validated if it is for the very moment when it was taken.

It is comprehensible why many people have a hard time wrapping their heads around this concept owing to the regressive societal structure but unacceptable if we as society dont beaver away to understand it better. It is the onus of each and every one of us to realize the true meaning of consent and all that it entails further it is even more important to enact it in our daily lives.
