Work Stress

For most people, work is very challenging and demanding. These demands can lead to high stress and this stress can be very harmful for the person and for the company as well.

Some stress is necessary for productivity, but a lot of stress can be counterproductive. It is important for everyone to remember that work stress can result in mental and physical pain. It can result in random aches and pains in the body, headaches and increase chances of falling ill, which increases medical bills as well.

We spend more than half our day at work. If our workplace is a negative environment, how can we be expected to function well the rest of the time? A lot of stress can also cause anxiety or depression, which are serious mental illnesses can affect your entire life. People with high stress and anxiety from work have a higher rate of missing work, low productivity, and low work performance. It can lead to them being reprimanded or fired at work as well, which can make mental health even worse.

As a mental health professional, I understand how painful it can be to be stressed all the time. Here are some tips to alleviate that stress:

  • Make relaxation part of your daily routine- counteract the stress at work with relaxation before, after, and during working hours

  • Make a relaxation kit based on your needs- some examples are guided meditation, deep breathing, yoga or exercise, scented candles, motivating notes, pictures of loved ones, a warm blanket, tea, etc

  • Confide in a loved one about your stress- sharing your pain can lessen it

  • When your stress spikes at work, try to be mindful and ask yourself “is this doable or am over stressing?”

While these are quick fixes, more serious cases of stress can only be helped through talk therapy.
